HAWTHORN vice-captain Jordan Lewis says he believes football supporters need to show more respect for decorated Sydney Swans’ footballer Adam Goodes.

Lewis said the booing of Goodes, a dual Brownlow medallist, was difficult to understand, and applauded Goodes’ teammate Lewis Jetta for the stand he made in the Swans’ match against the West Coast Eagles on Sunday.

“I was really impressed by what Lewis Jetta did,” Lewis said in a press conference at the club yesterday.

“I think the (booing) Adam Goodes thing has probably gone on too long, and supporters need to show a little bit more respect I think.

“I watched the game on TV – I don’t know what supporters are getting at and what they get out of it.

“I don’t like it, I think it should stop.”

In the Swans’ match against the Eagles, Jetta performed a rendition of the war dance Goodes used to celebrate a goal during Indigenous Round earlier this season.

Lewis said Jetta’s stand reflected the view of players across the league.

“I think on the weekend what we saw with Lewis Jetta, was players are actually sick of it,” he said.

“Players are starting to stand up against it, and through Lewis Jetta’s actions we’re starting to see that.

“Any player that’s interviewed and has played against Sydney and witnessed the booing of Adam Goodes, no one agrees with it.”
