GEELONG will be hoping to extend its good run of form when it takes on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night.
Having defeated top-four aspirants Sydney and the Western Bulldogs in the last month, the Cats will be confident of challenging the reigning premiers, as they fight for a spot in the top eight.
The Cats have put a greater emphasis on defence since their Round 15 loss to North Melbourne, keeping their opposition below 65 points in their last four matches, with coach Chris Scott feeling confident his side has improved as the season has gone on.
“We’ve been working really hard on it (defence) – I mean we always have – but in previous seasons we haven’t had the glaring lapses that we’ve had at times this year,” Scott said after the win against the Swans.
“To see it stand up particularly in the second half is a good sign.”
The Hawks have won the past three meetings between the two sides, however the Cats’ coach is measured when it comes to their chances of knocking off an arch nemesis, despite their continued development this season.
“We’re optimistic. In reality, I think we’re behind some of the best teams…but its hard to work out isn’t it?”
Players to Watch
Skipper Joel Selwood earned a perfect 10 votes from the coaches after gathering 35 disposals in his 200th game against the Swans, and has averaged almost 30 in his last three outings.
Power forward Tom Hawkins has also run into form, kicking 14 goals in the past month and has caused the Hawks many a headache over his career.
Steve Motlop is the Cats’ next best goalkicker with 24 for 2015, and enjoyed a season-best 32 disposals against the Swans, proving run and carry through the midfield.
Potential changes
George Horlin-Smith was subbed into the game against the Swans for Nakia Cockatoo during the last quarter and only managed four disposals.
The pair loom as the most likely to make way for Steve Johnson, who returns from suspension, and Shane Kersten, who is remains a test to recover from a toe injury.
Meanwhile, Jared Rivers (11 disposals), Billie Smedts (22), and defender Jed Bews (15 disposals) could also earn recalls from the VFL.
