Round 18

Hawthorn v Richmond
July 31, MCG

ALASTAIR Clarkson described the Hawks’ Round 18 loss to Richmond as a wake up call.

The Hawks produced a below-par performance in Clarkson’s 250th match as coach, allowing the Tigers to cause an 18-point upset and end the Hawks’ eight-game winning streak

"We've been up for a fair amount of time and our boys have been terrific, but our footy club and the whole footy world perhaps gets a bit of a wake-up call tonight," he said post-game.

The Tigers set the tone early, opening up a four-goal advantage early in the second quarter, before the Hawks hit back to lead at half time.

But Richmond kicked the first goal of the second half and was never headed.

On a disappointing night for the Hawks, Shaun Burgoyne (30 disposals), Jordan Lewis (34 disposals), Luke Hodge (28 disposals) and Isaac Smith were among the best.

Jack Gunston finished with three goals.

Round 19

West Coast Eagles v Hawthorn
August 8, Domain Stadium

BOUNCING back from a disappointing loss to Richmond was critical, and it was exactly what Hawthorn did in trying conditions against West Coast Eagles.

The Hawks travelled west and tackled the top-two Eagles on their home turf, claiming a thrilling 14-point victory to keep their own top-two chances alive.

The rain fell sideways at times, but the Hawks kept their cool, with a late goal to Jarryd Roughead sealing the deal.

Midfielders Sam Mitchell (36 disposals) and Jordan Lewis (30) were prominent, with Shaun Burgoyne, Liam Shiels, Billy Hartung and Grant Birchall all impressing.

Shiels laid a phenomenal 17 tackles, as the Hawks produced the response coach Alastair Clarkson was desperate for.
