ANGUS Litherland believes 2016 could be the year he cements himself in Hawthorn’s senior side.
The 23-year-old defender managed six games in 2015 and showed some promising signs in defence, but couldn’t establish himself within one of the most experienced back lines in the competition.
However, Litherland believes a strong pre-season will catapult him into the frame for regular selection next year.
“I think I’ve done my waiting, I’ve had plenty of patience,” he said on the final day of the Hawks’ pre-season camp in Mooloolaba.
“I’ve really put in some hard work over the summer and I’m really keen to break into the side and make a statement this year.”
He said he was constantly trying to find ways to improve and set higher standards.
“One thing with the team is everyone’s raised the bar just a little bit, and I need to raise the bar just a little bit higher,” Litherland said.
“To break into that side I need to improve on a few areas of my game and (develop) a bit more consistency.
Capable of playing a lockdown defensive role or offering run and rebound, Litherland hopes to find a home in defence.
It’s been a tough group to break into in recent years, but with the retirement of Brian Lake and departure of Matt Suckling, the time looks right for Litherland to make his mark.
“Hopefully (I can find a spot) somewhere in the back six,” he said.
“It’s a really good solid group back there and we speak very highly of each other within the group. It’s something that I’d be very proud to say, that I’m part of the defence at Hawthorn.”
