The Changes

Hawthorn

In: Rioli
Out: Howe

Sydney Swans

In: Kennedy, McGlynn, Rohan
Out: Papley, Hiscox, Towers

The Form

The Swans have been in good form in the last month, with an after-the-siren loss to Richmond their only blemish.

Prior to that they recorded a big win over Essendon, a narrow victory against Brisbane and a dominant performance over West Coast.

The form of Lance Franklin has everyone captivated and there is talk of the of him reaching 100 goals for the season, something which hasn’t been done since ‘Buddy’ did it with the Hawks in 2008.

But the Swans certainly aren’t a one-man band. Their midfield stacks up as one of the best in the competition.

Daniel Hannebery and Luke Parker have enjoyed excellent starts to the year, while senior leaders Kieran Jack and Josh Kennedy are also elite midfielders.

The Hawks have found some good form over the last fortnight, recording a runaway performance against Fremantle in their last game on the back of a dominant third quarter.

Isaac Smith was best on ground for the Hawks last week with 27 disposals and a goal, while acting captain Jordan Lewis also looks to be hitting his straps in recent weeks.

Cyril Rioli is back in for the Hawks which will only add to the side which took down the Dockers in Launceston last week.

The Hawks also looked to have rectified some issues around the ball, winning more contested possessions and clearances over the last fortnight.

The Stats That Matter

The Hawks have been able to generate 31 scoring shots in their last two matches to the Swans’ 35 and 25 respectively. Whichever side is able to hit the scoreboard more often will give themselves every chance of winning the game.

Key Player

The Hawks will be hoping that Will Langford can play at his best against the Swans. He does his best work at the coal face and under the packs, and his output along with Jordan Lewis and Sam Mitchell will be crucial in determining who wins the midfield battle.

It’s A Big Week For…

The Hawthorn Football Club. After an emotional week, the challenge for the 22 that run out on Friday - as well as the coaches and supporters - is to be able to focus on a big match against the Swans.

Odd Fact

Grant Birchall will elevate himself into the top 20 Hawthorn players in terms of games played on Friday night. The Hawks have three other current players in their top 20 for games played (Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis, Sam Mitchell).

Final Thoughts

This game promises to be an absolute belter, and if Hawthorn fans thought they had seen the last of close finishes this season, they could be wrong.
