HAWTHORN midfielder Liam Shiels says a second quarter lapse proved costly against Sydney Swans on Friday night at the MCG.
After an arm-wrestle in the first term, the Swans got on a run in the second quarter, opening up a six-goal advantage.
It proved to be the difference between the two sides, with the Hawks unable to close down the margin.
"Probably the second quarter, they just got on top of us there," Shiels said.
"We allowed them to kick six goals straight, but other than we weren't too bad... but just a lapse in concentration probably cost us there."
Shiels said the Hawks felt like they were on top in the first quarter, but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard.
The in-and-under midfielder was among the Hawks' best performers, collecting 26 disposals to continue his strong form.
Shiels also won nine clearances, laid seven tackles and drove his side inside 50 on five occasions.
