A tough night for all, but we’ve beaten the Pies by 10 points at the MCG! Rioli and Breust lethal up forward with 5 and 3 goals each.
The Rundown
Hawthorn did enough to put away an inaccurate Collingwood side in Round 14 at the MCG last year.
The Hawks led at every change thanks to a forward line which was able to generate multiple avenues to goal, despite Jarryd Roughead missing the match due to a melanoma being removed from his lip – a shock to the whole football community.
Cyril Rioli and Luke Breust were dynamic inside the forward 50, kicking five and three goals respectively as the Hawks got up by 10 points, despite having five less scoring shots than the Pies.
Jordan Lewis (36 possessions) and Sam Mitchell (33 possessions) led the disposal count for the reigning premiers, while Liam Shiels also had an exceptional game with 29 touches and two goals.
The game was the start of an emotional weekend for the entire AFL community after the tragic passing of Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh early that morning.
The Star
Cyril Rioli was the difference between the two sides, finishing with five goals from ten disposals, including a desperate dive to gather the ball in the dying stages which led to Luke Breust kicking the sealer.
The Moment
Following the final siren, both sides came together and linked arms in the middle of the ground for a moment’s silence, a touching tribute to Phil Walsh which was replicated after all other games during Round 14 last year.

The Coach
“The one touch that was most important of all was that dive for the loose ball (by Rioli) on the wing in the last quarter in the dying stages of the game which led to that Breust goal.” – Alastair Clarkson
