Sam Mitchell has said this morning he is open to discussions regarding a potential trade to West Coast Eagles.
The trade would include a playing and coaching component.
“About 12 months ago West Coast came to me with the idea of coaching when I was finished,” Mitchell told SEN.
“I spoke to Hawthorn about that and they know I have done a lot of coaching preparation.”
Two weeks ago Sam Mitchell and Alastair Clarkson spoke about his future, both from a playing and coaching perspective.
Mitchell, who is on holidays in New Zealand, said there was no certainty he would join the Eagles.
"I'm in a bit of a funny spot, because if I stay at Hawthorn that's great and I've had a great career there and will continue to do so," Mitchell said
"If the move is to West Coast, I'd be excited by the prospect, and I feel like I've done the right thing by Hawthorn if that's what eventuates.
"It's the first time, in my 15-year career, that I've ever been a chance to be involved in a trade so it's a bit of an awkward situation at the moment and I can't jump into either camp."
Hawthorn Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said:
“Alastair and Sam had an open conversation, as two friends, about the idea of Sam playing at West Coast and transitioning into a coaching role.
“The club asked Sam if this was something he would be interested in and if it was an opportunity he would like to explore.
“Sam was interested in the idea and wanted to investigate the possible trade.
“Both Hawthorn and West Coast will continue discussions with Sam focusing on his long-term future.
“There is still a long way to go before any trade decision is made.”
Hawthorn Football Club will not be making any further comment until a decision has been made.
