International Rules Captain Shaun Burgoyne has led Australia to a clean-sweep series victory over Ireland after taking out the second Virgin Australia International Rules Test 53-50 at Domain Stadium on Saturday.
The Australians, who took out the first Test by 10 points, came from as much as 16 points down in the third quarter to secure a narrow three-point victory and claim their first series win in the two-test format since 2010.
Triple premiership Hawk Burgoyne was amongst 10 Australians to score an over and landed a crucial smother in the dying moments to halt Ireland’s last-ditch attempt to take away Australia’s lead, while fellow Hawthorn teammate Jack Gunston was again a key pillar in the defensive half.
Docker Nat Fyfe was awarded the Jim Stynes Medal as Australia’s player of the series, while Australian Coach Chris Scott admitted the side needed to make some adjustments after the Irish burst out of the blocks to find the back of the net twice in the opening quarter.
“The Irish played a little bit higher in their formation, the week before they played their forwards back a little bit and didn’t pressure us as much and we needed to adjust to their pressure,” Scott said post-game.
“I think it’s pretty clear that we try to possess the ball a little bit more by hand and they try to back their kicking skills, we needed to be a little bit more prepared to kick the ball in the second half and that got it in our half a bit quicker.”
The International Rules series is set to continue again in 2018.
