Nicknamed ‘Plough’ by teammate Russell Greene, triple premiership player Terry Wallace played 174 games for the Hawks over nine seasons.

While Greene had thought Wallace resembled a plough in a potato field during a muddy night at training one week, the named captured the midfielder’s tough and in-and-under way of playing.

Joining Hawthorn as a 19-year-old from VFA side Camberwell, Wallace was immediately thrust into the Hawks’ senior side playing every game in his debut season including the 1978 premiership in which the Hawks defeated North Melbourne by three goals.

Playing predominantly in the centre, the number 16 claimed two best and fairest awards in his time with the Hawks, winning the Peter Crimmins Perpetual Memorial Trophy in both 1981 and the club’s premiership year of 1983.

While an equal-third placing in the Brownlow Medal came in ’82, Wallace’s career-best year was arguably the ’83 season in which he played every game and averaged just over 30 disposals, including three performances of 40-plus disposals.

Wallace finished up his career in the brown and gold on the highest possible note with 'Plough' vice-captain of the 1986 grand final side that triumphed over Carlton by 42 points.

A move was then made to the Tigers at season’s end, while Wallace ended up finishing his career at the Bulldogs.
