Hawthorn is set to celebrate the anniversaries of three past premierships at the Mighty Fighting Hawks Premiership Reunion on Sunday 17th June, with the event to be held at Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

The event will honour the 40th, 30th and 10th anniversaries of the 1978, 1988 and 2008 premierships, giving fans the opportunity to hear stories from the greats who made it all happen.

Join past and present players for a three-course meal with premium beverages, as together we celebrate the anniversaries of these historical wins.

Defeating one of their greatest rivals in North Melbourne, Hawthorn won the 1978 premiership by 18 points. Hawthorn greats Don Scott and Leigh Matthews were at their inspirational best as Coach David Parkin led the Hawks to their fourth premiership in front of a crowd of 101,704 at the MCG. Peter Knights provided some of the highlights of the match when, after being knocked out in the backline, he shifted forward to take a series of spectacular marks and kick two magnificent goals.

The 1988 grand final was Hawthorn’s sixth straight as they lined up against hot favourite Melbourne. When the final siren sounded, the Hawks’ spectacular winning margin of 96 points put the doubters to shame and broke the AFL record of 83 points set by Hawthorn five years prior. Kicking 18 goals between them, Jason Dunstall, Paul Abbott and Dermott Brereton put on a spectacular show, while Gary Ayres became the first player to win two Norm Smith Medals.

The most recent of the three, the 2008 premiership saw newly appointed Coach Alastair Clarkson lead the Hawks to their tenth premiership, ending a 17-year drought. The Cats went in overwhelming favourites, having won 23 of their 24 games that year. It was neck and neck until late into the third quarter when the Hawks showed their dominance with show-stopping play by Cyril Rioli and Mark Williams, as well as a now famed performance from cult hero Stuart Dew. Former Hawthorn veteran Luke Hodge was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for his triumphant performance.

All Hawthorn members and supporters are invited to attend the event and honour the club’s premiership heroes of years past, with the option to choose from Bronze, Silver or Gold ticketing categories.

Tickets are limited and will not be issued at the door.
