The Hawks' most recent crop of draftees have impressed throughout both the pre-season and this year's opening VFL rounds - with one already making his senior debut. Take a look below at how each player is tracking.
James Worpel
The Hawks’ first selection at last year’s draft hasn’t disappointed in his start to the season, playing multiple practice matches with Box Hill as well as their opening two rounds. Predominantly playing through the midfield with stints up forward, Worpel has so far used his size and strength to good effect, impressing with his clearance work and tackling ability while also consistently managing to hit the scoreboard. On the weekend, Frankston thought so highly of the new Hawk that they sent a tag to him for much of the game, though Worpel still managed a respectable 18 touches. The former Geelong Falcon has scored seven goals across his six appearances at VFL level and appears set to make his AFL debut at some stage in 2018.
Dylan Moore
Taken will Pick 67 in last year’s draft, Moore has impressed with Box Hill so far, racking up plenty of the ball and finding the goals too. Playing mainly on the wing and across half forward, Moore had 24 disposals in Box Hill’s Round 1 clash and managed to kick 1.3 before suffering a shoulder injury late in Round 2. He has displayed a huge tank and an ability make good decisions with ball in hand. His endurance is also a key strength, having registered a fourth-place finish in his first and only time trial at the club.
Jackson Ross
Ross looked lively early, kicking a goal and handing off another in Box Hill’s first practice match before sitting out the remainder of the game with a shoulder issue. He has spent most of his time playing in attack across three VFL appearances where he’s also impressed with his pressure as he continues to build his forward craft.
Changkuoth Jiath
‘CJ’ has made just the one appearance for Box Hill in 2018, playing the first half against Footscray in a practice before being sidelined with groin soreness. He showcased his endurance and high-marking ability throughout the pre-season, particularly lively in Hawthorn's intra-club hit out, and will be hoping to make a return via Box Hill shortly.
Harrison Jones
Pick 7 in last year’s Rookie Draft, Jones has impressed across three appearances at VFL level spending the majority of his time playing as an inside midfielder, with stints up forward. Has gradually built up his game time up after recovering from a back injury and has been lively around stoppages, impressing with his creativity by hand and strong tackling ability.
David Mirra
The Hawks’ mature-age rookie broke through for his AFL debut after a series of impressive performances down back with Box Hill. Strong both one-on-one and in the marking contest, Mirra's performance was met with acclaim from the football world, gathering 18 disposals and taking three marks as the side recorded a 67-point win over Melbourne.
