Hawthorn defender James Sicily is likely to be sidelined for an extended period after scans revealed he suffered a broken scaphoid in Saturday’s loss to the Brisbane Lions.
Sicily will undergo surgery today and is expected to miss at least six weeks.
GM-Football Graham Wright said it was a disappointing outcome for Sicily and the club, but his absence opens the door for someone else to take their opportunity.
“It’s obviously really unfortunate for James and the club,” Wright said.
“James has been in great form of late, and he’ll be really difficult to replace.
“But, this presents an opportunity to the guys who have been in good touch at Box Hill.
“Someone will step up to fill the void, and we’ll continue on in our pursuit of finals footy.”
The injury is an ill-timed setback for the rebounding defender, who has enjoyed a breakout season in 2018.
The 23-year-old has averaged 24 disposals, 7.5 marks and 4.7 rebound 50s across his 14 appearances this year.
