Hawthorn has injected further expertise and experience into the club’s 2022 coaching panel with the appointment of Robert Harvey.

Harvey joins the Hawks after spending the past 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Collingwood, a period that saw the Magpies reach five finals campaigns including the 2018 Grand Final.

Harvey was also recognised as the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013. 

Harvey’s appointment signals the final piece of the club’s new-look coaching line-up following the signings of exciting additions Andrew Collins, David Hale, Adrian Hickmott as well as the re-signing of Chris Newman.

Prior to his time with Collingwood, the 50-year-old Harvey was with Carlton for the 2009 and 2010 seasons before returning to St Kilda in 2011.

One of the most decorated players to ever grace the football field, Harvey played 383 games with the Saints over 21 years, winning two Brownlow Medals, four club best and fairests and eight All Australian honours among a host of other accolades.

Head of Football Rob McCartney said the club was thrilled to welcome Harvey into the brown and gold family.

“With Robert Harvey comes a wealth of experience in the football landscape,” McCartney said.

“We believe his coaching style and method really complement the other members of our group, which gives a strong and holistic feel to our coaching squad. 

“He has built an impressive coaching resume over the past 13 years, with involvement in a number of high-performing football programs, including the caretaker senior coaching role at Collingwood in 2021.

“While Robert will bring his highly renowned football IQ and technical nous to Hawthorn, we are equally excited about the significant cultural impact he will have as we plan for the future success of our football club.”
