Hawthorn youngster Jacob Koschitzke is making a promising recovery from shoulder surgery.

Koschitzke injured his right shoulder in the Hawks final game of the season against Richmond, with the forward forced to finish the game on the bench following an incident in the third quarter of the Round 23 match-up.

The 21-year-old then went under the knife in the weeks following the end of the season, but Physical Performance Manager Luke Boyd said the club had been pleased with Koschitzke’s progress.

“Kosi is now a few weeks into his recovery post-surgery, and we’ve been really happy with the improvements he has been making,” Boyd said.

“He has already commenced his running program and we expect his pre-season to be completely unaffected, which is great.”

Boyd echoed a similar level of optimism for defensive trio James Sicily (knee), Jarman Impey (ankle) and Changkuoth Jiath (knee) who all finished the 2021 season on the sidelines.

“Sis will be in full training when he gets back to the club, and I’m sure he’ll be raring to go from day one,” Boyd said.

“He was able to get a really good block of skill work in during the final weeks of our season which has really set him up to be good to go for the start of pre-season.

“Jars has started running outside after that ankle injury and he will start back into the skills program upon his return from off-season.

“CJ is commencing a running program within the next week and we’re expecting him to start some skill work back with the group prior to Christmas as well.”

Meanwhile Connor Downie has had surgery on his ankle following a training injury.

“Connor unfortunately sustained a syndesmosis injury in our last training session,” Boyd said.

“We had to wait two weeks for swelling to go down before we could do further investigation and Connor has since required surgery on that ankle.

“He will have a delayed start to pre-season training, but we don’t expect this to impact his capacity to be ready for Round 1.”
