The clash will mark a momentous occasion with it being Sam Mitchell’s first outing as Hawthorn’s senior coach.

The four-time premiership Hawk took over the helm at the end of the 2021 season and has since brought in an exciting change with a new-look coaching panel featuring David Hale Robert Harvey, Adrian Hickmott, Andy Collins, Chris Newman and Andy Otten.

It will also be the first time the two teams have met at the MCG since Round 3 in 2019, having played their most recent outings between UTAS Stadium and Marvel Stadium.

But most pleasingly, the opening game presents an opportunity for Hawthorn members and fans to get back to doing what they love – attending a home game blockbuster at the ‘G.

Hawthorn’s Chief Commercial Officer Ash Klein said the fixture release was a significant moment for members and supporters after another challenging year.

“To have the fixture locked in for our season opener in 2022 is just fantastic,” Klein said.

“It was difficult being away from our Victorian members and fans for the back half of season 2021.

“An opening match at our Melbourne home is really exciting and we’re looking forward to welcoming back our members and fans. We hope to see as many of our brown and gold family fill the stands.”

The Hawks will kick off their 2022 season on Sunday 20 March at 1.10pm. The match will be televised on Foxtel and Kayo.
