Hawthorn has  finalised the roles for the new coaching team ahead of season 2022.

Sam Mitchell is set to begin his first year at the helm with a streamlined and new-look coaching panel, bringing with it a number of changes across the ground.

Here are the areas our coaches will be overseeing next season.

Robert Harvey – Midfield

After a 21-season and 383-game career with St Kilda, the dual Brownlow Medallist and AFL Hall of Famer turned his attention to coaching.

Harvey joins the Hawks after spending the past 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Collingwood, as well as much of season 2021 as senior coach.  Throughout that  period the Pies reached five finals campaigns.

Harvey was  recognised as the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013.

Heading into 2022, Harvey will return to the area of the ground he knows best, leading a midfield crop which features the likes of Tom Mitchell, James Worpel and Jaeger O’Meara.

Adrian Hickmott – Contest

Hickmott enters the Hawks as an assistant coach having spent the last 10 years at West Coast.

Hickmott played a critical role in the Eagles 2018 premiership success as the club’s contested ball coordinator while also having roles during his time as backline and midfield coach.

He joined the Eagles as a development coach in 2011 after coaching at VFL and TAC Cup level, following a 184-game playing career at Geelong and Carlton.

A highly accomplished coach, Hickmott has a proven ability to both develop and nurture young talent as well as success around the contested ball.

David Hale – Forwards

A three-time Hawks premiership forward-ruckman, Hale forged an impressive 237-game career which included stints at North Melbourne and Hawthorn.

Since his retirement after the Hawks 2015 Grand Final win, Hale spent the past six seasons at Fremantle as an assistant coach, in which he most recently oversaw the club’s forward line group including the development of players like Matt Taberner.

He will now join former teammate Mitchell at the Hawks, helping to guide the club’s attacking talent such as Jacob Koschitzke, Dylan Moore, Mitch Lewis,  alongside veterans Luke Breust and Jack Gunston.

Chris Newman – Backline

After a 268-game career at Richmond, Newman moved straight into Hawthorn’s coaching ranks as a development coach after his retirement in 2015.

Newman took on the role as the coach of Box Hill leading the  team to the 2018 VFL premiership as well asbeing named VFL coach of the year the previous season.

Weeks after becoming a VFL premiership coach, Newman was elevated to an assistant coach with Hawthorn.

After a year as stoppages coach, Newman then transitioned to backline coach to support 2020 where is has overseen the development of the club’s exciting and emerging defenders.

Newman will be leading an exciting defensive group which includes Will Day, Denver Grainger-Barras, Changkuoth Jiath, Jack Scrimshaw, Jarman Impey, Blake Hardwick, , Sam Frost along with returning star James Sicily.

Damian Monkhorst – Rucks

Monkhorst joined Hawthorn as ruck coach in 2010 following a stellar career at AFL level.

Known as one of the league's best and toughest ruckmen to play against during his career with both Collingwood and St Kilda, Monkhorst has passed on his knowledge to Hawthorn's ruck stocks since his arrival.

A member of the Collingwood’s 1990 premiership team, Monkhorst played 215 games and kicked 45 goals between 1988 and 2000 and twice represented Victoria in State of Origin.

Monkhorst was inducted into the Collingwood Hall of Fame in 2014.

Now heading into his 13th year as ruck coach, Monkhorst will have a new challenge as he looks to develop new recruit Max Lynch.

Andy Collins – Head of Development

Former three-time premiership Hawk Andy Collins has come on board as Hawthorn’s Head of Development ahead of season 2022.

‘Collo’ brings a strong coaching resume to the Hawks having previously coached VFL sides Williamstown and Sandringham to premierships, as well as spending six years in charge of West Adelaide in the SANFL.

In season 2021, Collins held the position of senior assistant coach at Box Hill, where he worked closely alongside Mitchell.

Across his 212-game career at the Hawks in the late 80s and 90s, Collins won three premierships, a Peter Crimmins Medal and state honours.

With an exceptional coaching background and proven ability to nurture and develop emerging football talent, Collins will play a pivotal role in helping to develop Hawthorn’s young list.

Andy Otten – Development

Otten joined Hawthorn for the 2020 season as both a development coach and a player for Box Hill, following a career that spanned over 12 years at the Adelaide Crows.

His time at Hawthorn so far has been focussed on the development of the younger players, while taking a very active role with the Box Hill side.

Heading into 2022, Otten will serve as Box Hill’s senior assistant and as a development coach at Hawthorn.

Originally taken with Pick 27 in the 2007 national draft, Otten carved out an impressive 109 games as a Crow, having overcome much adversity over the course of his career including two knee reconstructions.
