Round 5 saw the VFLW Hawks claim their biggest win of the season to date, defeating the Bulldogs by 101 points.
The Dogs opened the scoring for the day, before the Hawks dominated possession, controlling the game with mighty fighting force.
The Hawks scored four goals in the opening quarter; Kristy Stratton sealing two, Dom Carbone and Lauren Szigeti both kicking one each.
Despite the strong start, the pressure from the Dogs was still high as they fought to retain face on home ground. However, the fierce combination of Von Bertouch and Richardson, along with Cox, playing down back for the first time, kept the Bulldogs scoreless.
Goals were coming from everywhere, from set shots as well as on the run. Szigeti kicked her second, before Eliza Shannon, Montana Beruldsen and Jessie Williams joined in on the fun! Dom Carbone sealed the half with a goal after the siren.
Accuracy in front of the goals wasn’t as strong in the second quarter, so in the break coach Cherie O’Neill reminded the girls to focus on the fundamentals, maintaining strong focuses on accuracy and efficiency as well as points on the scoreboard.
O’Neill encouraged the girls to work smarter not harder, and remain unstoppable in the final quarters.
The second half demonstrated a lot more control by the Hawks: Kristy Stratton kicked another in the third term, and Mietta Kendall joined the scoreboard with a snap around the body goal.
Stratton kicked four for the day, followed closely by three from Dom Carbone. Both Williams and Kendall kicked their second goals in the final term. Captain Tamara Luke kicked the magic goal to take the Hawks to 100.
Post-match, Coach Cherie O’Neill expressed how she loved the last quarter- and for good reason!
“It was a great team effort today, I couldn’t be more proud,” she told the girls in the huddle.
It was all smiles in the rooms after such a powerful performance by the Hawks. This week sealed a three-game winning streak for the Hawks, and bodes well for the remainder of the season.
