Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell and several players shared plenty of insight across multiple media channels this week.
Off the back of a strong first round win, the likes of Changkuoth Jiath, Jack Gunston and James Sicily discussed a range of topics including a teammate's long-sleeve jumper and coaching philosophies.
Did you miss them on your airwaves and television screens? Well, here is your weekly recap!
James Sicily - 3AW
Speaking in the rooms straight after the win, Sicily was thrilled to haven taken home a victory in what was his first outing since Round 20, 2020.
"I was a little bit emotional after the siren when the crowd erupted," he said.
"It was a long 18 months of rehab, I was very grateful to be back out there on the 'G in front of a crowd, it was bloody awesome."
Everyone in the Hawthorn rooms sung the song in the circle post-win, which Sicily explained was in recognition of the important figures behind-the-scenes.
"We've got a lot of new staff here now, and we probably haven't been able to involve as many staff members as we would've liked in the two years due to COVID-19," he said.
"A lot of work has gone in to get a result like this today, and we thought it would be nice touch to get everyone involved and a good moment."
Changkouth Jiath – RSN
Producing a superb individual performance, Jiath made quite the return off the back of his injury where he played his last game in Round 17 last year.
But the 22-year-old said there was plenty of nerves early ahead of his first game back.
"Leading into the game, at the start of the week I was so nervous," Jiath said.
"When the team got announced on Thursday I was still pretty nervous then. But then I woke up on the day of the game and I felt like I hadn't missed anything, I felt very comfortable."
Sam Mitchell - AFL 360
Mitchell was joined by former teammate and fellow senior coach Stuart Dew on AFL 360 on Monday night.
Both coaches were pleased to come out of the season opener with a win, although some fans didn’t have faith in the team.
“My son was grumpy because he didn’t get a mention in the press conference, but he did tip against Hawthorn at school! I'm glad he lost his footy tipping for this week,” Mitchell said.
While the Hawks won the game, Mitchell conceded that it was a hard fight with North Melbourne.
“We want to be a consistently high-pressure team and we have shown glimpses over the pre-season but we haven't been able to sustain that. It's going to take a long time to embed the game style we want.”
Sam Mitchell - 3AW
Mitchell also spoke on 3AW about his game and coaching style following the season opener.
“We have started afresh and are trying to do new things,” Mitchell told 3AW.
“I had a week going into Round 1 where I made it clear that I wanted to focus on one-on-one training. Partly because I thought after the pre-season people would be getting sick of hearing my voice.”
Jack Gunston was a very exciting addition to the side after returning from an injury, Mitchell added.
“Gunston has worked really hard, to have the mentality and patience to work to get himself, he deserves a lot of credit."
Jack Gunston – SEN
Speaking to SEN on Wednesday, Gunston spoke glowingly of his new coach's on-field philosophies, revealing how Mitchell has been able to influence the senior players.
“Sam’s been great, and it’s been great for us old guys,” Gunston told SEN SA Breakfast.
“In some ways, we’ve had to unlearn some old habits and it’s been a great way to explore other avenues that footy is played, and Sam has such a great footy brain that he brings unique strategies in, it’s been great for us older guys.
“With Sam, there’s a bit more freedom and a bit more flair and I guess he wants the guys to use their weapons and I guess we saw that on the weekend.”
Jaeger O’Meara - SEN
O’Meara spoke to Dwayne Russell on Monday about his acting role as captain in the absence of Ben McEvoy.
“Sam called me and told me I was going to be the stand in captain for the game. It was an absolute honour to lead the boys out,” O’Meara told SEN.
“We had a few challenges out there but we still managed to get the win which was pleasing.”
The 28-year-old said he was enjoying his time playing with a new-look Hawthorn outfit.
“The team found the new coaching style really refreshing during the pre-season,” O’Meara said.
“We have a young list and have some new coaches. We are still learning and trying to build our game plan.”
O'Meara's teammate Chad Wingard caught plenty of attention when he opted to wear a long-sleeve jumper, leading to plenty of discussion.
“I was surprised to see Chad in long sleeves in 28 degrees weather, but we do play some games down in Tassie which can get pretty cold so I think you'll see a few more boys wearing the long sleeves,” O’Meara said.
Mitch Lewis - Triple M
Speaking to JB & Billy on Triple M, Lewis also discussed the uniform choice of his teammate.
“It was 28 degrees and Chad stuck to wearing the long sleeves. If he plays like he did with the sleeves then he can keep them," he said.
Lewis said he expected a tight tussle when his the Hawks take on Port Adelaide come Saturday night.
“They are an experienced side, especially around the ball. It's going to be a tough task but we are looking forward to the match."
