The game may have been in the Sunshine state against the Gold Coast Suns, but it was the Box Hill Hawks who brought the heat.

A strong effort across three quarters allowed the Hawks to waltz back to Victoria with a 22-point win and a spot inside the top eight.

The game was underway quickly and while the Suns got first blood, it was goal for goal early in the opening term. Our first three came through Jackson Callow, Ben Cavarra and Fergus Greene, all of whom finished with multiple goals to their name.

Jack Saunders also managed a major in the opening quarter, while Greene slotted another two to have three of his eventual four for the afternoon by quarter-time. The Hawks sat ahead by a single point at the first break.

The second term saw the Suns get some momentum straight out of the gates with two early majors from Chris Burgess. The Hawks had their opportunities, but the results saw just five behinds, until the 25th-minute when Brady Grey slotted one for the brown and gold, followed by a fourth from Ferg with a free kick after the half-time siren.

We trailed by two at the main break. The rev up from Coach, Clint Proctor must’ve been a good one, because the boys came out in the third and booted four unanswered goals as the Suns took their turn at slotting behinds.

A five goal to two third term was instrumental in the Hawks’ win. And to further lift the spirits, first gamer Max Hall got involved putting through his first VFL goal, which was welcomed with a whole-team celebration.

The Hawks kept things rolling home in the last, as it went from raining goals to literally raining in the final few minutes of play. We managed a further four goals to our tally, to the Suns two, maintaining the effort and consistency to take a win interstate for our first away game this season.

We’ve discussed the goals, but the Hawks defence was just as vital in securing the win. We were well led down back by leaders and veterans of the club in Damian Mascitti, Hawthorn’s Kyle Hartigan and returning Skipper, Hugh Beasley. The trio were relentless and did their best to stop everything that came their way, with the backline tightening up as a unit as the game progressed.

All three earnt themselves a spot in the best players. Mascitti racked up the most disposals for the Hawks, with 26 at games end. While Beasley’s return was strong, having battled the game out with his usual pressure and determination, after suffering a minor shoulder injury early in the second.

Ben Cavarra was named best afield for the Hawks, with his presence dynamic as ever. He not only managed three goals of his own, but created opportunities for others and unstoppable in pursuit. He finished with 19 disposals and four inside 50s, as well as taking a game-high seven marks.

Hawthorn listed Jackson Callow was also named in our best. With four goals for the day, he was impressive in the lead up forward role, securing six marks and had 16 disposals.

James Parsons had the second-highest disposal count for the Hawks with 23, second only to Mascitti. His effort was elite, run and carry was impressive, and the goal he secured was that of a long bomb on the run, which seems to be becoming his signature.

The Hawks will now look ahead to Round 11, with Box Hill set to take on North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval on Sunday afternoon.
