Coach Sam Mitchell says he will continue to use the second half the year as a leadership development opportunity for his playing group.

James Sicily has captained the Hawks for the last six rounds due to Captain Ben McEvoy's injury, with Jaeger O'Meara also undertaking a stint as captain prior to then.

Sicily will captain his side this week against Fremantle on Saturday, but as outlined earlier this season, Mitchell said the club's captaincy is likely to change hands again after the bye.

"(The bye) will be a chance to reset some of our leadership programs and have a look at what the second half of the season looks like," Mitchell said.

“O’Meara is an obvious candidate, but there are other guys in the conversation.

“We have quite a depth of leadership we are developing and that flattening of our leadership structure has allowed some more guys to step up."

Mitchell added that despite being sidelined, McEvoy continues to be an inspiring figurehead for the Hawthorn side.

“He is in a neck brace jumping up doing agility circuits,” Mitchell said.

“He's an inspiration to watch, he is a 100kg, 200cm man running in a neck brace.

“What he has been able to do physically is been really impressive. It makes anyone not up for training that day have a look in the mirror.”
