Check out all the information you need to know below.
When is the AFLW Draft?
The AFLW Draft will take place on Wednesday June 29 at 7pm AEST. Hawthorn fans can watch the draft unfold live and free on womens.afl.
Why is the AFLW a state-based draft and how does it work?
Due to the semi-professional nature of AFLW, it’s hard for players to move across the country on a part-time basis. In a state-based draft, players nominate which zone they would like to play AFLW in - it might not always be their home state or region. For example, if a player nominates New South Wales as their preferred zone, they can only be drafted by clubs in New South Wales. Players can only nominate one zone.
What zones can players nominate for?
Victoria, Tasmania (North Melbourne)- must reside in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Gold Coast only, Brisbane only, Queensland, New South Wales and international.
What picks does Hawthorn have?
Hawthorn has picks 1, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 in the Victorian pool of the draft. These picks translate to 2, 6, 9, 10, 22, 25 and 26 in a national sense.
What is Hawthorn’s draft strategy?
The Hawks are focused on picking the best talent available to complement our already strong AFLW list and continue our journey into the competition.
How will AFLW draftees balance their schooling with footy?
Draftees who are still completing Year 12 will be able to play AFLW this season but with a few contingencies in place. Firstly, they will be known as “development players” and will need to work with a newly appointed AFLW player engagement manager, their school and their parent/ carer to create an engagement plan to help balance school and footy. These plans will be catered to each individual, as some may be looking to maximise their ATAR while others may want to finish Year 12 through an alternative route. In terms of training, development players will have to attend one training session a week with one optional session also available. When it comes to playing, a call is dependent on a conversation between the club and the player development manager. Once a player has graduated, they can rejoin the full AFLW program.
