Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell has conceded his side couldn’t do enough right in a tough 22-point loss to the GWS Giants on Sunday.
In a rain-soaked contest, the Hawks started with a spark, taking a six-point lead into quarter time.
But the scoring dried up following the first break, as Hawthorn failed to capitalise on nine consecutive inside 50s to be held goalless in the second term.
In a frustrating final half, the Hawks could only manage three further majors to suffer a bruising defeat in the wet.
“We got a lot of things right, but too many things wrong,” Mitchell said.
“We had control of the game and territory for a lot of the game, but we just weren’t able to put a score on.
“I think it was a little bit of conditions, but it was key moments in the game, we just need to really take our chances.
“But we’re very aware of the journey that we are on, and the good thing about this game is you get to front back up in seven days time.”
Midfielder James Worpel was the sole injury for the Hawks, subbed out in the first quarter following a shoulder injury.
“It wasn’t ideal, but we don’t ever rely on one player,” Mitchell said.
“It was a disappointing outcome for him and for us, because he was just starting to get back his form and his confidence.
“I think he’s going to be a very important player for this football club.”
