Hawks star Tom Mitchell says he has been buoyed by his young side's ability to remain competitive throughout the majority of the season to date.
It has been a tough year on paper for Hawthorn - having fallen on the wrong side of several close encounters throughout 2022 - including six matches lost under 25 points.
But, speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mitchell said he believed the win-loss record hasn't accurately reflected his side's season so far.
"I think Hawthorn fans would be pleased that we are competitive," Mitchell said.
"We've had a few games where we haven't been, but for a majority of the season we have.
"That hasn't been reflected in the win-loss record, which can be tough as competitors and as athletes, but we realise the journey we're on and where we want to go.
"I think being competitive is a really good start."
Mitchell was one of the strong performers in his team's 22-point loss to GWS on Sunday, finishing with a game-high 35 disposals.
"We're continuing to find new players, and a midfield mix that can carry us forward, I'm just a part of that," Mitchell said.
"We've seen this year, guys like Jai Newcombe coming into the team, Conor Nash is improving and taking his game to another level, Josh Ward when he's been in the team.
"I'll be playing my part in the team, whether it is forward or midfield, I'll be playing my role that I'm required to play that day."
