Hawthorn AFLW Senior Coach Bec Goddard was proud of her side’s collective effort in Friday night’s win over West Coast.
Vice-captain Jess Duffin was the star of the show after making the successful move from defensive 50 to inside 50. The 33-year-old booted three goals in the second quarter alone, which helped kickstart Hawthorn’s comeback following a poor start. Goddard spoke through the move post-game.
“We knew that West Coast would drop someone back and the way to match that was to always drop her there,” the Hawks coach said.
“She’s an unbelievably good intercept mark. She just had her moments tonight. When the ball came in, she looked dangerous and she’s a very good kick.”
The other positional move Goddard orchestrated was to send Aileen Gilroy into the midfield and it paid off as the 29-year-old finished with 15 disposals, 10 tackles and 491 metres gained. While Gilroy acted as a bigger body, Goddard praised Hawthorn’s young midfield for standing up against the Eagles’ experience.
“The thing about Jas (Fleming) and Charlotte (Baskaran) and all the young girls in our team is that they’re in Year 12 and they’re studying,” Goddard said.
“Then they come to footy to study as well and learn as each week goes by.
“She (Jas) keeps getting better as each week goes by. Her run and carry, her smarts with the football are just incredible. She really set the team up for success tonight.”
Overall, Goddard was impressed with her side’s ability to stick to the task despite an unideal start.
“The wind had a significant impact on the contest and the team that planned for the wind best was going to win the game,” Goddard said.
“We felt like we didn’t deviate from our plan tonight even when West Coast won the toss. We knew they were going to score but we stayed calm and got on with it.”
The Hawks will now turn their attention to Port Adelaide with the two expansion sides to face off on Saturday night at SkyBus Stadium.
