Zane Littlejohn has revealed Hawthorn’s talented young list was a major factor in his decision to join the club in his new dual role.
The 36-year-old will take the reins as Hawthorn’s Development Coach heading into the 2023 season, while also spearheading the Box Hill program as Senior Coach.
After spending the past six years at the Brisbane Lions, Littlejohn said he couldn’t wait to head south and help mentor Hawthorn’s emerging wave of players.
“Naturally, I knew they were going to be a pretty young list, and it’s probably something that drew me to the job to be honest,” Littlejohn said.
“That’s the exciting bit – working with young and emerging talent who are fresh to the AFL environment and just want to get better”
Littlejohn brings a wealth of experience during time spent time as a teacher, while also enjoying success at the state league level – having won back-to-back premierships with North Launceston in Tasmania.
“Whether it’s being a teacher or coach, I’ve tried to be the best that I can. I don’t hide behind the fact that I’m ambitious,” he said.
With the Hawks fresh from a season where they fielded more players aged 23 and under per game compared to any other club, Littlejohn’s role will be crucial in the club’s journey back to the top.
“With the talent they have brought in, on top of the talent already at the club – I can see they have a real hunger and want to improve,” he said.
“If they’ve got that mindset, then anything can be achieved.”
Littlejohn will work closely with Hawthorn’s first to fifth year players to help fast-track their development.
“We just need to give these young talented men an opportunity to continue to grow,” he said.
“We’ll continue to just try and improve every day and who knows where we can get to in a short time.”
