Coach Sam Mitchell has confirmed there will be some fresh faces taking to the field for Hawthorn in the club's season opener this weekend.

When speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mitchell was coy as to whether there would be any debutants this Sunday, but revealed there will be some players donning the brown and gold for the first time.

“I’m not sure just yet (who may be debuting), we don't play until Sunday so we still have a couple of extra days of training and we'll do selection on Thursday,” Mitchell said.

“We’ll have some players who are debuting for Hawthorn, but whether or not there’s any debutants we will find out later in the week.

“We’ve bought in some talent from some other clubs - Karl Amon, Lloyd Meek, Cooper Stephens and then Fergus Greene who has had a couple of years at Box Hill.

“I think they have added a real extra dimension to our group, when training gets really hard, Ferg is pretty regularly saying 'where would you rather be?' He always reminds the boys what they’re doing now is pretty special.”

With less than a week now to Round 1, Mitchell said there was a feeling of both nerves and excitement among the group.

“There’s a nervous energy around Round 1 – even as a player you get to this time of year with a fear inside you,” Mitchell said.

“But we’ve given ourselves every chance to be in that situation now where we can play well.

“Our game style and attitude towards the game should be evident right from the start and we hope that we can put our best foot forward and make our fans proud to come along to a Sunday afternoon to the MCG, which will hopefully be a nice crowd.

“I think we’ve got a lot of energy in the group – and a real enthusiasm for the way we go about the game – we’re excited about seeing what this group can do.

“I feel confident that we will be perhaps a little bit better than some people think.”
