Hawthorn is pleased to announce that its entire inaugural AFLW draft class has recommitted to the club.
Jasmine Fleming, Mackenzie Eardley, Emily Everist, Lucy Wales and Laura Elliott have signed on until the end of the 2024 season while Charlotte Baskaran and Bridie Hipwell have put pen to paper until the end of the 2023 season.
Fleming made an instant impact in her debut AFLW season, averaging 14.4 disposals, 4.3 tackles and 3.2 clearances from her nine appearances in the brown and gold.
The 18-year-old came third in the AFLW Rising Star and Hawthorn’s AFLW best and fairest counts, as well as being selected in the AFL Players’ Association AFLW 22under22 side and named the Hawks Rising Star.
Eardley showed promising signs as a defender in Season 7, with averages of 7.1 disposals and 215.4 metres gained thanks to her long, powerful kicks out of defensive 50.
Everist also showed signs of the player she could be in the backline, making her debut in Round 5 and playing her best game in Round 8, finishing with five disposals and five tackles against GWS.
Wales burst onto the scene in the ruck, averaging 16.8 hit-outs to rank 12th in the competition.
Playing in all 10 games last season, the 19-year-old received an AFLW Rising Star nomination for her 17 hit-outs, 10 disposals and five tackles against Port Adelaide in Round 7.
Like Everist and Eardley, Elliott also successfully slotted into Hawthorn’s backline, making six appearances for the season and averaging 5.7 disposals.
Baskaran had a successful year in the midfield, playing all 10 games in Season 7 and averaging 10.5 disposals and 5.1 tackles, all while completing Year 12 studies.
The 18-year-old’s best performance came in Round 10 against Fremantle where she gathered 14 possessions and laid eight tackles.
Hipwell improved with each game she played inside 50, kicking two important goals in Rounds 7 and 8 to go with an average of 4.7 disposals from her six games.
Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Mitchell Cashion was delighted to secure the signatures of all seven 2022 draftees.
“We’re thrilled to have Jasmine, Mackenzie, Emily, Lucy, Laura, Charlotte and Bridie all recommit to the club after a really promising inaugural season,” Cashion said.
“All seven players proved they were capable of succeeding at the elite level and, on top of that, they were diligent workers on the track and all-round great people.
“We look forward to seeing what the future holds for each of them in the brown and gold.”
