Hawthorn is set blood its second debutant for the season, with Seamus Mitchell named to play his first AFL game against GWS Giants at Norwood Oval on Sunday.

The 20-year-old, who hails from Robinvale in the state’s far north-west, will get his chance at the top level in the league’s highly anticipated Gather Round, as the Hawks head to South Australia for the historic weekend.

Mitchell has made the most of an injury-free run in 2023, piecing together a strong pre-season before being among Box Hill’s best in its undefeated start to the VFL season.

The speedy utility has thrived since making a shift down back, using his pace to generate damaging drive and dash from defence, averaging 22 possessions and 6.5 marks per game.

Selected by the Hawks with Pick 29 in the 2020 national draft, Mitchell has since joined the rookie list to continue the talented youngster’s development.

Hawthorn General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said Mitchell’s selection had been warranted following several strong performances at VFL level.

“It’s a real thrill that Seamus has been named to play his first game, he absolutely deserves this opportunity,” McCartney said.

“Gifted with genuine speed, Seamus has shown a great ability to play a rebounding defender role and be a real weapon for his side in generating offensive drive.

“Seamus has shown great resilience during his short time here at the club, battling through multiple injuries to return to the field and play the sort of football we all knew he could.

“I’m sure plenty of Seamus’ family and friends will be jumping in the car to make the trip to see his first game in Gather Round.”
