Hawthorn will head to Marvel Stadium for the first time this year when they take on the Western Bulldogs this Saturday.

Saturday's twilight game will see the Hawks go head to head with the 11th-placed Dogs who have recorded a 3-3 start to the season.

Hawthorn will be searching for a second win for the year after back-to-back narrow losses during the last fortnight of less than a goal to GWS and Adelaide.

The two sides have met 166 times, with Hawthorn leading the win-loss ledger by four games (84 to the Dogs’ 80) and two draws.

The game will mark youngsters Josh Weddle and Max Ramsden debuts, as well as the return of key forward Mitch Lewis who has recovered from a knee injury.

Last time we met

Western Bulldogs (87) defeated Hawthorn (64) - Round 23, 2022

The Bulldogs finished their home and away season with a 23-point win over Hawthorn in Launceston.

In his final game for the Hawks, dual-premiership winner Ben McEvoy notched two goals, former Hawk Jack Gunston kicked four while James Sicily was outstanding with a game-high 33 possessions.

The Bulldogs dominated territory early and kicked the opening two goals before Hawthorn went on a run of four goals with the breeze for a 12-point lead at quarter time.

Hawthorn kept pace, before the Dogs hit the front 52-49 at the main break, before a low-scoring third quarter saw the visitors take a 10-point lead into the last break.

Dylan Moore gave Hawthorn the best possible start in the final quarter with a goal inside the first minute to reduce the margin to just four points, but the Bulldogs rallied, keeping the Hawks to just 1.2 for the term.

Our last game

Adelaide pulled off a last-gasp three-point win over Hawthorn, kicking two clutch goals to run over the top in a thrilling finish at UTAS Stadium.

The Crows trailed by nine points with mere minutes remaining at UTAS on Sunday, before Izak Rankine gave them some life with a snap goal on the run.

It was the Hawks' second tight loss in as many rounds after a heartbreaking two-point defeat at the hands of the Giants last week.

Hawthorn turned up the defensive heat from the outset, registering 32 tackles in the first quarter - the best of any side in an opening term this season. There were 165 tackles in the match, the most of any game in 2023.

The match was tit-for-tat throughout, with no side leading by more than three points at the breaks.

Fergus Greene kicked three while Conor Nash also featured among the Hawks best with a team-high 28 disposals and seven clearances, as well as a bone-rattling tackle on Jake Soligo in the third term.
