Casey Sherriff and Eliza West’s journey together began well before they took the footy field for Melbourne.

The newest Hawks recruits spent much of their childhood playing basketball together for the Southern Peninsula Sharks before switching over to footy and being picked up by the Demons.

Sherriff lived out her AFLW dream in 2019 after being recruited as a replacement player for none other than Daisy Pearce.

The 25-year-old reflected on how far she has come since that year, following her 48 games in the red and blue.

“It’s been a long journey,” she said.

“I wasn’t very good when I started but I feel like I’ve come a long way since then.

“I’m keen to keep growing and developing with everyone at Hawthorn.”

Sherriff was particularly thrilled to continue her football journey in the brown and gold alongside childhood friend West.

“I’m super excited and keen to get stuck into it with Westy, I love playing with her,” the new Hawthorn winger said.

“We’ve been playing together basically our whole lives so I am so excited she came, it’s going to be so good.

“It’s a long time until pre-season but I’m sure I’ll get around the girls in the next few months.”

Capping off the exciting move is the fact that Sherriff is a loyal Hawks supporter, finally getting the chance to play for the club she supported as a child.

“I’m a lifelong Hawks supporter so I wanted to make the move over here and I’m super excited to be here,” Sheriff said.

“I loved Sam Mitchell growing up, he was one of my favourite players.

“I used to have a couple of photos of him when I was little so hopefully I meet him soon.”

In terms of what Sherriff will deliver on the field, Hawks fans can expect plenty of speed, endurance and outside run from the clever winger.

In a hope to further develop those attributes, the 25-year-old has pinpointed two players she would particularly like to learn from.

“I’ve been catching up with Emily and Greta over the past couple of weeks and I’m keen to learn from them,” Sheriff said.

“They’ve got a lot of experience coming from Brisbane which is obviously a high-performing program.

“I’m keen to learn a lot from them which will be good.”
