Despite a 28-point loss to Collingwood on the weekend, Hawthorn’s VFLW coach Paddy Hill said there were still plenty of positives to take away from the game.
Hill was especially proud of his side’s ability to turn the game around following a poor first half where his side was outscored six goals to one.
“They (Collingwood) went inside 50 three times in the first quarter and unfortunately kicked three goals from that,” said Hill post-match.
“We thought we addressed that, but in the second quarter it actually just got worse.
“There are a few things we need to fix there, but I was really proud of the girls in the second half.
“The response was really good and to come away winning the second half is a testament to our group.”
Hawthorn played with a relatively inexperienced side compared to their Magpie counterparts who had 11 of their 21 AFLW-listed players on the park.
Hawthorn’s AFLW-listed players will return over the next few rounds following enforced breaks from their AFLW clubs.
“We have a bunch of players to still come back into the side, I think we still have eight AFLW players.
“It’s been really good for the bottom of our list to sort of get some opportunities and test them and see where they’re at.
“They’ll have a better indication going forward of what they need to do and hopefully in the next few weeks they’ll show that improvement.
Over the next two rounds Hawthorn will play two of the other non-AFLW-aligned clubs – Darebin and Williamstown.
Like the Hawks, Darebin are winless to date and will be looking to put their first win on the board.
Hawthorn plays Darebin this Saturday at Bill Lawry Oval at 12.00pm.
