As gutsy as it gets

With Hawthorn entering the game in 15th position on the ladder against the second-placed Collingwood, it's fair to say the Hawks entered Friday night's game as overwhelming underdogs. Despite a dominant opening term possession-wise, the Hawks' chances of an unlikely win did not improve after the first quarter with the boys unable to convert from their six shots at goal. But the side was willing to grind and, as the tides eventually turned on its accuracy in front of goal, Hawthorn's courage saw them record arguably its best win of the season.

Mitch Lewis stands tall

After a one-month stint in the VFL, Mitch Lewis returned to the senior side in fine fashion on Friday night. Lewis showed a determination to remain at AFL level for the remainder of the year, collecting a career-high 16 disposals and seven marks (three of which were contested) to go along with his two important majors. On the big stage that is Friday night football, Mitch Lewis announced himself to the football world.

Sis strong

After a few weeks flicking between the forward and backlines, Coach Alastair Clarkson stuck with James Sicily as a full-time defender on Friday night in a move that paid off in spades. Sicily was a clear best on ground, influential both in the air and by foot. His 14 marks were a career-high as were his 23 kicks, with the 24-year-old showing a clear and justified desire to use the ball damagingly out of the back half.
