Reigning Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell has put pen to paper, signing a two-year contract extension with the Hawks.
The new deal will see the 26-year-old remain at Waverley until at least the end of 2023.
“We’re really pleased to have Tom re-commit to the club for the long-term,” said GM-Football Graham Wright.
“He’s such a valuable player for us, and we see him playing an important role for a long time to come.
“His work around the stoppages and his ability to accumulate high disposal numbers is second to none.
“Tom has been attacking his rehab program with great intent over the past few months, and we’re really looking forward to having him back out on the park.”
After switching from the red and white at the end of 2016, Mitchell enjoyed a dream start to his individual career with the Hawks.
Awarded the Peter Crimmins Medal in 2017, the midfielder took things up another notch, winning the league’s highest individual honour – a Brownlow Medal – in 2018.
But in January, it all came to a quick halt; a broken leg in the first training session of year, and his 2019 campaign over before it began.
After a difficult six months, Mitchell says his contract extension is cause for optimism.
“It gives you some confidence that the club backs you in, and I’m looking forward to repaying the faith and hopefully playing some good footy,” Mitchell said.
“Rehab can be a bit of a lonely place at times but I feel like I’m on the mend and recovering really well.
“When the time comes to return to play I think I’ll be ready to go.”
As for the future, Mitchell has one clear ambition in mind.
“To be play in grand finals and win a premiership is my ultimate goal.
“I’ll be doing everything I can to contribute to the team’s success going forward.”
