The Rundown
It was Round 3 this year and Hawthorn and North Melbourne were both looking to establish their seasons.
The Hawks had won one of their two matches so far, but North Melbourne had lost both and was feeling the pinch. A third-straight loss would sound alarm bells.
Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels were both ruled out of the side with hamstring injuries, but big-name recruit Chad Wingard was set to make his debut in the brown and gold.
The Star
Luke Breust put on a masterclass up forward kicking five goals straight from his 13 disposals.
The Hawks had a slow start to the game kicking just the one goal in the first quarter whilst the Kangaroos managed to add four.
But then in stepped Breust who kicked two goals in the second quarter including a signature snap from the boundary.
A goal in the third and then two in the final quarter helped seal the game for the Hawks.
The Moment
In his first game in his new colours, Wingard showed his new club and their fans what he is capable of.
Despite only having 10 disposals for the match, Wingard’s goals changed the game.
With one point the difference at three quarter time, the last term was vital and Wingard stood up.
The All Australian kicked the first goal of the quarter through a set shot from a tight angle and a second goal midway through the quarter when he took two defenders on and snapped a goal on his left.
It was a debut to remember.
The Coach
“it just took some time for us to adjust to the manner the ball was being moved but once we did we were able to find a way to defend well and give ourselves a chance to get back into the game.”– Clarkson
