It doesn’t get much better than playing in a big game, in front of a big crowd at the MCG.
For first-year Hawk Daniel Howe, that opportunity came in just his second AFL match.
The 19-year-old started as the substitute, entering the game in the final quarter of the Hawks’ 36-point win against rivals Geelong on Saturday night.
“That was great,” Howe said after the game.
“It was good to get out onto the ‘G for the first time, in front of a big crowd.
“It’s always been a dream of mine, and to achieve that is pretty cool.”
Howe made his AFL debut – also as the substitute – against Gold Coast Suns at Aurora Stadium earlier this year.
The utility wasted no time getting involved against the Cats, picking up four disposals, plus two one-percenters, an inside-50 and a centre clearance in just under a quarter of football.
“I was the sub tonight, so I got used to the ground conditions before I went on, which was handy,” he said.
“It’s obviously a bit nerve-wracking, especially when you can’t do anything about the game.
“You’ve just got to take your opportunity when you get on the ground.”
Strong form at VFL level earned Howe his second AFL game, and he’s hopeful he can maintain his spot and the Hawks can keep winning with finals football just around the corner.
“We’ve got three games to go, so to tick this game off was nice and hopefully we can keep winning heading into finals,” he said.
