BRENDAN Whitecross and Dallas Willsmore were among Box Hill Hawks’ best players in their loss to Williamstown on the weekend, according to Coach Marco Bello.
While the Hawks went down to the Seagulls by 14 points on the eve of finals, Bello said the duo’s performances were two positives out of the game.
Whitecross finished with 28 disposals and Willsmore 25, with both having an impact across the ground.
Bello said Whitecross had enjoyed a consistent couple of weeks.
“Brendan was probably one of our better performers on the day," Bello said.
“He had 22 kicks and six handballs, used the ball fairly well and had a good balance between contested and uncontested possession.
“He had seven rebound 50s and five inside 50s, so he worked hard at the defensive end but also gave us the opportunity going into our forward 50.”
Willsmore has had a consistent season, and Bello said his game against the Seagulls on a wing was among his “better games for the year.”
“He enabled us to springboard from defence, because it was down there a fair bit, and he had two inside 50s and five rebound 50s, so he was working hard at both ends of the ground,” Bello said.
“Also what I liked about him is he complemented that with some pressure on the opposition, he had five tackles for the day, which is a season high for him.”
Matt Spangher made a successful return from a hamstring injury, as did Kurt Heatherley, with the rookie-listed New Zealander also floating forward to kick a goal.
