For Hawks veteran Sam Mitchell, this week is a case of the indigenous game versus the beautiful game.
A long-time Tottenham Hotspur fan, Mitchell is set to play in the Hawks match against Gold Coast SUNS at Aurora Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Soon after the conclusion of that game in Launceston, his beloved premier league side will take the field in a friendly against A-League grand finallists Sydney FC, which kicks off from 8pm at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
It has been 30 years since the eight-time FA Cup winners toured Australia, but with the Hawks’ Round 9 clash against the Suns, Mitchell’s sporting diary is full.
A faithful servant of the Hawks for the past 14 years, Mitchell’s loyalties to his club and code will be divided this Saturday.
“I’m really excited but at the same time it’s a bit frustrating because we’re playing down in Tasmania against Gold Coast Suns on the same day!” he said.
When it comes to Tottenham, the Hawks’ premiership captain has been a supporter for a few years. Typically, parents pass on their sporting allegiances to their children, but in Mitchell’s case the roles were almost reversed.
“My best friend lived in London for a couple of years. I love the soccer, but I really didn't have a team,” Mitchell said.
“He was a Tottenham fan and he sent me a top, like a little kid’s kit. So I gave that to my son and he wore that all the time and then I had a team.”
When it comes to his favourite players the four-time Peter Crimmins medallist feels a connection with Jan Vertonghen and he is also a fan of Belgian footballer Mousa Dembele, who joined Tottenham in 2012.
“I've only been going for them a couple of years. But I love Vertonghen. I wear number five as well,” Mitchell said.
“I've got a Dembele top so he's probably the one I enjoy watching. He’s so skilful and he is a good attacking player, but he is also good defensively and in our game defence is so important.”
Mitchell visited White Hart Lane in November 2014 while he was in London to attend an annual Leaders Sport Performance Summit that was held the home of Arsenal FC, Emirates Stadium.
While in the UK, the skilled midfielder got the opportunity to attend the Tottenham v Stoke Premier League match, which the Spurs lost 1-2.
The EPL team will bring a world-class squad to Sydney, with their current list including rising superstar Harry Kane, Danish midfield wizard Christian Eriksen and champion French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham Hotspur will play Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium from 8pm, Saturday 30 May.
