Lost to North Melbourne by 22 points
Ladder position: 12th
A strong start wasn’t enough to get the Hawks over the line against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Friday night, eventually going down to the Kangaroos by 22 points.
It was a night of celebrations with the brown and gold faithful cheering on Shaun Burgoyne as he broke the AFL/VFL indigenous record playing his 373rd game, whilst North Melbourne celebrated their 150th year in the competition.
Hawthorn started well kicking the first four goals of the match. Mitchell Lewis was back to his best booting two of the first three goals of the game and James Worpel was on fire collecting 11 first quarter disposals and six clearances.
Unfortunately, the Kangaroos lifted in the second term through midfielders Ben Cunnington and Shaun Higgins. The experienced duo won 16 clearances in the second quarter bringing their side back into the game.
North hit the lead in the third quarter and it was all one way from there with Ben Brown booting four goals and captain Jack Ziebel kicking three.
Lost to North Melbourne by two points
Ladder position: 8th
Box Hill and North Melbourne opened Round 18 of the Victorian Football League when the two sides met on Saturday afternoon at Arden Street Oval.
North Melbourne’s VFL side were also celebrating the club’s 150th year and also the retirement of defender Sam Wright who was playing his final game for the club.
It looked as though Box Hill were going to spoil the party as they got out to a flying start kicking seven goals to North’s three in the first half.
By the three-quarter time break the Hawks were leading by 31-points and looked set for a victory.
North had other plans piling on six final quarter goals to the Hawks five behinds to steal the win by just two points.
Mat Walker had another impressive game down forward kicking four goals and Kaiden Brand moved from defence to attack where he booted two.
Defeated Melbourne University by 23 points
Ladder position: 5th
Hawthorn pulled off a massive win against North Melbourne AFLW affiliate Melbourne University on Sunday when they defeated the home side by 23 points.
The Hawks kicked three goals in the first quarter to Melbourne University’s two, but the Mugars came back to kick four in the second and go into the half time break with an eight-point lead.
After the half time break the Hawks came out firing in one of their most impressive quarters for the season. Hawthorn kicked six goals straight for the quarter through captain Tam Luke, gun forward Sarah Perkins and midfielder Rebecca Beeson.
The girls held on in the final quarter and eventually came away 23 point winners.
Netball
Division 1 lost to Boroondara by 8 goals
Hawks Netball’s Division 1 team played in the semi-final against the Boroondara Express at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
Having beaten the Express two weeks prior, Hawks Netball went into the game with confidence.
However it wasn’t enough to get the Hawks over the line as they went down by eight goals.
Their loss marks the end of the Hawks Netball season for all three teams.
Wheelchair
Lost to Collingwood by 61 points
Ladder position: 4th
The Hawks wheelchair team came up against second-placed Collingwood on Sunday afternoon at the Boroondara Sports Complex.
Collingwood had a dominant first half scoring 12 goals to Hawthorn’s four and went into the half-time break with a 49-point lead.
The Hawks didn’t give up and were instead able to match it with the Magpies in the third quarter scoring 13 points apiece.
Their strong second half continued in the final quarter where they limited the Magpies to just three goals.
Collingwood eventually came away winners by 61 points.
Blind
Lost to St Kilda by 14 points
Ladder position: 3rd
Hawthorn’s blind team played St Kilda on Saturday morning at the Action Indoor Sports Centre at Tullamarine.
The Hawks went into half time with an eight point lead however the Saints came back in the second half.
St Kilda kicked six goals in the second half to win by 14 points.
