The Hawks and Blues are set to contest the Alec Campbell Cup as part of the AFL’s ANZAC Round when the two sides meet at UTAS Stadium this Sunday.

Named in honour of the final surviving Gallipoli veteran Alec Campbell, the game will be played in memory of all those who have served in the Australian and New Zealand armed forces. 

A Launceston local, Alec Campbell joined the Australian Army at the age of 16 in 1915, before embarking on a venture to ANZAC Cove where he carried ammunition, stores and water to the trenches.

In 2000, he was recognised as an Australian Legend for the significant contributions he made to his country. He passed away in 2002 aged 103, the last surviving link to the group of Australians that established the ANZAC legend.

This weekend’s game will mark 10 years since the Hawks first contested the Alec Campbell Cup; it was presented to Hawthorn in 2009, after the club defeated West Coast by 18 points during ANZAC Round at York Park.
