Hawks’ hot start
Hawthorn couldn’t have asked for a better start to this Round 11 clash, silencing the crowd early as they kept Brisbane goalless while kicking five majors of its own. It was the best first quarter of the Hawks’ season to date and, in previous years, might have proved enough to overcome the Lions. But Chris Fagan’s side has a new-found belief and its response to a slow opening term is testament to that.
Chad hurt
One of the big stories to emerge from the night was a suspected soft-tissue injury to Hawks forward Chad Wingard. Wingard left the field with a hamstring problem in the 19-point defeat and took no part in the final quarter. It continues a rough start to his career with the Hawks after a calf injury curtailed his pre-season and kept him out of the first two rounds.

Sis to be looked at
Hawks fans will be keeping an eye on the match review panel on Monday after James Sicily got involved in an incident with Lions small forward Lincoln McCarthy. Sicily could come under scrutiny from the Match Review Officer after hitting McCarthy in the stomach in the first quarter of Saturday night’s game. The hit sent the Lion to ground, but he was ultimately able to resume.
Good bye time
Hawthorn has a week off to contemplate its 5-6 start to the season, one of six teams to have a bye. After the match, Hawks midfielder Isaac Smith said the break came at a good time for the group, providing the opportunity to rest and recuperate ahead of the second half of the season.
