Worpel took his game to another level in 2019.
If you had to find one positive to take away from Tom Mitchell’s season-ending injury it was that it opened up the doors for Worpel to become a regular in Hawthorn’s midfield.
The 20-year-old took his opportunity with both hands playing every single match in 2019 and finished the year leading his team in disposals, clearances and contested possessions.
The midfield-bull averaged 6.3 clearances along with 12 contested possessions a game showing his ability to win the ball as an inside-mid.
His season went from strength-to-strength and in the final seven games of the year he averaged 30.4 disposals, up from an average of 24 for the 16 games prior.
Worpel’s game against Gold Coast in particular was a standout where he had 34 disposals and 11 clearances.
Sam Mitchell’s protege has got Hawks fans excited, especially for when Tom Mitchell returns to the side next season.
The midfield combination of Worpel, Mitchell and O’Meara will be force to be reckoned with.
