Jarryd Roughead will retire with the ninth-highest games tally in Hawthorn history.
This Sunday’s match against Gold Coast will be Roughead’s 283rd game, placing him close to halfway between eighth-placed Kelvin Moore (300 games) and equal tenth-placed Gary Ayres and Jason Dunstall (both 269 games).
On the Hawthorn career goals tally, Roughead is likely to finish in sixth place. He currently has 572 career goals, which places him just eight goals behind Lance Franklin who holds fifth place with 580 goals.
Many of Roughead’s career highs came in pairs. He twice kicked 75 goals in a season (in 2008 and 2014); twice kicked eight goals in a game (in 2009 and 2014); and twice had 30 disposals in a game (both in 2015).

GWS’s score of 4.5.29 last Friday night was the lowest by a Hawthorn opponent since Brisbane Bears kicked 2.5.17 at Princes Park in Round 12 1988. It is just the sixth time since joining the League in 1925 that Hawthorn has restricted an opponent to a score below 30, the others prior to the 1988 game being in 1931, 1956, 1964 and 1966.
Changkuoth Jiath became the third player recruited from Morwell to represent Hawthorn. The previous two debuted in the 1980s, dual Premiership player Paul Abbott and the late Robert Dickson.
This Sunday, Gold Coast will become the 14th different opponent which Hawthorn has played at Docklands. This will leave Brisbane Lions, GWS Giants and Melbourne as the only teams which Hawthorn has not played at the venue.
After losses to St Kilda, Essendon and North Melbourne earlier in the year, victory against Gold Coast will ensure that the Hawks win a game at Docklands this season. There has only been one previous season when the Hawks have not recorded a win at Docklands in the stadium’s 20-season history as an AFL venue, which was in 2005.
In total, Hawthorn has played 78 games at Docklands for 45 wins, 32 defeats and one draw, with a longest winning sequence of 10 from 2011 to 2014.
Hawthorn won its first eight games against Gold Coast, which was a better starting record than against any other club. The run ended in 2017, when the Hawks lost to the Suns by 86 points at Carrara in Round 3 and then suffered another defeat by 16 points at the MCG in Round 12.
Hawthorn bounced back with a 53-point win versus Gold Coast at University of Tasmania Stadium in Round 14 last season, the third occasion on which the Hawks had beaten the Suns by exactly that margin. This left the overall record between the clubs at 9-2 in Hawthorn’s favour.
Hawthorn has had a home game against Gold Coast every season since the Suns entered the competition in 2011, making 2019 the ninth consecutive season this has happened. Five of the previous eight home games have been played at University of Tasmania Stadium and three at the MCG. In contrast, the Hawks have only had three away games against the Suns - in 2011, 2014 and 2017.
The first-ever match between the two clubs was in Launceston in Round 13 2011. Gold Coast were competitive in the first half, but the Hawks kicked away to a 71-point win – 19.15.129 to 8.10.58. Two young Hawks, Luke Breust and Shane Savage, both kicked four goals, with Savage also accumulating 33 disposals. Best on ground was Sam Mitchell with 38 disposals, while Luke Hodge and Grant Birchall were also among the best.
Round 22 was first contested in 1970 and, in the 49 seasons since, Hawthorn has won 32 and lost 17. Hawthorn won six consecutive Round 22 matches from 2010 to 2015, before losing to West Coast (2016) and Carlton (2017). However, the Hawks returned to the winning list against St Kilda last season.
For most of its existence Round 22 was the final round of the home and away season, but in 1991-92, 1994, and from 2011 onwards there have been further rounds played.
20 years ago, in Round 22 1999, Hawthorn played the final AFL game at Waverley Park against Sydney and won 23.15.153 to 11.2.68. Nathan Thompson kicked six goals and Nick Holland five. For the first time in many weeks Shane Crawford was not the leading possession-getter with that honour going to Richard Taylor (29), closely followed by Craig Treleven (28).
30 years ago, in Round 22 1989, Hawthorn tuned up for the Finals with a 90-point win versus St Kilda at Waverley – 28.13.181 to 13.13.91. Jason Dunstall kicked 11 goals and Peter Curran five, while John Platten collected 41 disposals and kicked three goals.
40 years ago, in Round 22 1979, Hawthorn finished a difficult season on a positive note with a 38-point win against Footscray at the Western Oval – 14.19.103 to 9.11.65. Michael Tuck, Terry Wallace and Geoff Ablett were among the best for the Hawks who finished the season with a 10-12 record and seventh position on the ladder.
Both Peter Hudson and Jason Dunstall regularly kicked large tallies of goals in Round 22. Hudson kicked 11 (1970), 10 (1971) and seven (1977), while Dunstall booted 12 (1992), 11 (1989) and 10 (1988, 1993 and 1996).
The record for Hawthorn against Gold Coast is five, held jointly by Luke Breust (2011), Lance Franklin (2013) and Jack Gunston (2014 and 2017).
