Hawthorn has built an early reputation this season as third quarter specialists, having won all four of its third terms so far in 2019.
Although, at the other end of the spectrum, the Hawks have won just one of their fourth quarters, against North Melbourne in Round 3.
This trend follows a similar line to last year, when the third quarter proved the Hawks’ best with 14 wins to rate equal-third in the league, while they ranked equal-14th in fourth quarters, with nine wins.
It hasn’t just been the fact that the Hawks have scored more than their opponents in each of their third quarters – it is the magnitude of the discrepancy with 119 points for and 47 points against in third terms so far for a percentage of 253.2 per cent.

It’s also a similar tale in the fourth for the wrong reasons though with 61 points scored for and 111 against at 55 per cent.
For reference, Hawthorn has won two of its opening stanzas and three of its second terms.
Only four clubs have won a certain quarter in each of their opening four games, with Fremantle joining the Hawks by winning all of its third terms so far while Gold Coast and Collingwood have dominated their respective opening terms.
With so many of the Hawthorn-Geelong battles going down to the final moments in recent years, Alastair Clarkson’s men will be hoping they can reverse this trend throughout the first month of the year.
