It was all smiles post game for the Hawthorn women, as they held off the Mugars to register another victory and capture top spot on the VFLW ladder.

And Abbey Tanner had extra reason to smile, with the Hawks' ruck notching up a win in her 100th career game.

“I’m pretty blown away at the moment,” Tanner said post-match.

“I’m really thrilled that I got the opportunity to run it out with Hawthorn.

“The girls have a very special place in my heart and I love them to bits so it was great that I got to run out alongside them.”

The Hawks were able to overcome some wayward kicking to record their eighth win of the season as they defeated Melbourne University by six points on Sunday.

The Hawks had 13 shots at goal but were only able to convert three of them as they were forced to grind out an impressive win, which sees them capture top spot on the ladder.

Despite having managed just two wins so far this year, Melbourne University gave a strong account of themselves against the Hawks.

“We were really lucky to have come away with the win today,” Tanner said.

“They were a really quality opposition to come up against.”

Hawthorn will now enjoy a weekend off before setting their sights on the Southern Saints at Trevor Barker Oval the following week.
