Superstar Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell has been crowned the 2018 Brownlow Medallist. 

After a stunning campaign in which he broke the AFL record for most disposals in a season, Mitchell polled 28 votes to take out the prestigious award.

Collingwood’s Steele Sidebottom followed on 24 votes, with Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw (21) rounding out the top three.

The 25-year-old led the league in disposals (848) and clearances (192), and was recognised as ‘best on ground’ on six occasions during the home and away season.

The award is the latest in a string of accolades Mitchell has already received in 2018. He was named rover in the All Australian team of the year, and was honoured by his peers as the AFLPA’s MVP.

Mitchell is Hawthorn’s reigning Peter Crimmins Medallist, and the hot favourite to again take out the club’s best and fairest award in a fortnight’s time.

He becomes the 109^th Brownlow medallist in AFL history, and just the sixth Hawk to be crowned, following in the footsteps of Sam Mitchell (2012), Shane Crawford (1999), Robert DiPierDomenico (1988), John Platten (1987) and Col Austen (1949).
