The Rundown

The Hawks travelled to Adelaide Oval with a mandate from coach Alastair Clarkson to rectify their previously poor recent history against the Power.

This challenge was greeted by Power fans with predictable hostility, as the game also matched the mood with a noticeably heightened level of ferocity and toughness.

The Hawks led at halftime by a goal, before breaking the game open in the third term as Port struggled to an on song Hawthorn.

The Hawks would run away with a hard fought win, claiming victory by 22 points.

The Star

Hawks captain Luke Hodge was a stand-out for the visitors, despite constant booing from Power fans, he finished with 29 disposals in a game that demanded his style of play. With four rebound 50s, seven clearances and five inside 50s, Hodge terrorized the Power in all aspects of the game in a fiery contest.

The Moment

The moment of the game came early in the fourth when the Hawks performed a “typically Hawthorn” piece of play. A scrappy ball sent inside 50 momentarily sat up perfectly for Jonathan Ceglar who, using his ruck skills, deftly tapped the ball behind himself to a waiting Paul Puopolo. Puopolo gave it off to a slashing Jack Gunston, who was able to finish skilfully on his left. Despite Power storming home, this piece of play exemplified the superior skill of the Hawks on the night, as they put the game out of the host’s reach.

The Coach

“It was about coming into a pretty hostile, foreign environment and getting a pretty important victory for our footy club. We’ve been quite poor against the footy club and it was time we took a stand and get ourselves a victory”.- Alastair Clarkson
