“What they don't have, I think, is the quality of some of our players; they don't have the psychological drive we have. We've beaten Geelong when it matters.”— Jeff Kennett
Let the curse begin.
Round 1, 2009, MCG: Geelong 15.21 (111) def. Hawthorn 16.7 (103)
If you are one to buy into the notion of The Kennett Curse, then it was these words that kick-started an 11-game run of Geelong dominance over the Hawks.
In reality, the Hawks should never have been as close as they were in this round one grand final replay.
By the end of the game, the Cats had taken 36 scoring shots to the Hawks’ 23.
Nevertheless, the Hawks hung on to the Cats all game, despite the margin extending out to as much as 43 points early in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks were gallant, with Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead combining to kick six last quarter goals to cut the difference to within one straight kick.
But it was not to be as the Curse (or the Cats, whichever way you choose to look at it) held the Hawks off by eight points.
