First-year rookie James Cousins is set to make his AFL debut against Sydney on Friday night, having been elevated to Hawthorn’s senior list.
Selected with Pick 46 in the 2017 Rookie Draft, Cousins has gone from strength to strength since arriving at Waverley. The former Murray Bushranger has consistently been listed among Box Hill’s best performers, averaging 24 disposals and six tackles across his six VFL games.
Last week saw arguably Cousins most impressive output, with the 19-year-old collecting 29 touches (16 contested), as well as a match-high 15 tackles and 10 clearances.
According to GM-Football Jason Burt, Cousins has earned his elevation through sheer hard work.
“It’s a really great story,” says Burt.
“James is a young kid who came to the club via last year’s Rookie Draft, and really hasn’t put a foot wrong since.
“He has a great work ethic both on the field and at training, and his contested ball numbers in the VFL this year are a testament to that.
“He has forced his AFL selection through a string of strong performances for Box Hill, and we’re really excited to see what he can produce at the top level.”
Hawthorn will announce its Round 10 team 6.25pm on Thursday, as they prepare to face the Swans at the SCG on Friday night.
