The Rundown

The Eagles were determined to rectify their poor showing against the Hawks in the Round 2 Grand Final Replay earlier in the year.

Their desire was visible instantly as three opening term Josh Kennedy goals helped the Eagles to a 20-point lead at the first break.

Skill errors and missed opportunities began to emerge as a theme for the visitors, as usual instigator Sam Mitchell was being held quiet by a determined West Coast midfield.

The Eagles returned for the second half with a 32-point lead and, had it not been for some poor accuracy in front of goal, 3.9 for the quarter, their lead of 41 points at the final change could have been drastically larger.

The Hawks never gave up, winning the final quarter, but the game was too far out of reach and Eagles ran away 25 point victors in an important win for their finals chances.

The Star

All-Australian full forward Josh Kennedy proved too much to handle for the Hawks defence as he had a huge influence on the result. Kicking five goals, including three in the opening term, Kennedy was at his dominant best. The potent forward also combined with Jack Darling in taking eight forward 50 marks, in what was a strength of the Eagles for the entire game.

The Moment

This game will be acknowledged by both clubs in a poor light given a few moments of madness in the third term. Within mere minutes of each other, the respective ruckman of each side, Jonathan Ceglar and Nic Naitanui, were helped from the field in freakishly coincidental circumstances as both faced a year on the sidelines after rupturing their Anterior Cruciate Ligaments. On an already grim night for the Hawks, this moment would prove to have undesired long lasting repercussions.
